My passion for hardware started in a hangar in La Verne, CA while I was still finishing high school — fabricating instrument panels and installing autopilots and wiring harnesses at an avionics shop. I did that for four years before going back to school and earning a degree in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University.
I spent the next decade in electronics packaging, space vehicle architecture, and quantum computing. Having been the person assembling someone else's design, I bring machinists and technicians into my process early and expect them to push back.
I still build things with my own hands. I've restored a van and built a CNC'd sliding door hinge I sold to an owners' community. Most recently, I rebuilt a sailboat and captained it 4,500 miles through the open ocean.
I held a Top Secret/SCI clearance with SAP access and a polygraph, since lapsed.

Career Break: Sailboat refit & offshore passage
SV Chérie · US East Coast to Guatemala
Rebuilt every major subsystem of a 31-ft sailboat — structure, repower, electrical, plumbing, rigging — to a standard intended to survive a multi-year offshore voyage. Then sailed it roughly 4,500 nautical miles up and down the US East Coast, through the Bahamas and onto Guatemala via the notorious Windward Passage and Jamaica.
